The cowboy way

Let's make poetry cool again

If you found the “about” section of this newsletter, then you saw where I mentioned how I have no real strategic plan for what Notes from Tennessee will become. And that’s true; I started this thing to force myself to write about things I’m thinking about. That’s it. My purpose, even for using the word “notes” instead of something more formal, was to keep it lighthearted.

So with that said, here’s a poem. Yesterday afternoon I was on a run and listening to one of my favorite audiobooks, Lonesome Dove. About 3 miles in, I took my headphones out and gave myself some space. I was thinking about the west and all it means when this poem happened:

The cowboy way

The cowboy way
begins like a breeze,
you sleep under stars,
you work with ease,
you risk it all,
when you just know,
and trust in things,
that may never show.

The cowboy way
rolls on like a breeze,
you sleep among stars,
you dream with ease,
you work all day,
or just til it's done,
and all the while,
you call it fun.

The cowboy way
is one with the breeze,
you sleep with the stars,
you love with ease,
you'll do anything,
when push comes to shove,
and you place your hope,
in the man above.

Hope y’all have a great Tuesday,

Cole
